Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

PCOS originates from the ovaries. The ovaries produce estrogen and androgens in varying amounts. When this balance between estrogen and the androgens is upset, this can result in infertility, irregular ovulation, ovarian cysts, and hirsutism (facial hair growth). Certain genes can influence one’s predisposition to PCOS, but the main cause of this condition is environmental factors and lifestyle. One of these causes is insulin resistance. When cells don't respond normally to insulin, one’s blood sugar goes up which then prompts the body to release even more insulin in order to try to lower the blood sugar. This in turn can lead to the production of androgens and further upset the estrogen and androgen balance in the body.

One of the main ways to reduce insulin resistance is to lower one’s added sugar and carbohydrate intake so that the cells learn how to absorb insulin properly again without constantly maintaining a high blood sugar. Another way would be to frequently exercise as carbohydrates are the body’s main fuel source during exercise. In all, although PCOS may be affected by some genetic factors, there are many natural remedies that can be done in order to limit the chance of contracting PCOS from environmental factors and lifestyle.
